Rejoice

You have been set free from sin and death by the blood of Jesus Christ! God’s promises are eternal. You get to have God, every spiritual blessing, and immeasurable riches of His grace.

You have been forgiven and assured of eternal life.

 – John 5:24

Nothing can separate you from God’s love.

 – Romans 8:38-39

Spend time with God

This can seem strange to a new believer, but if you think of how the Bible relates God to a father, bridegroom, husband, friend, etc. you can understand a little clearer that God is a relational God.

We often make a relationship with God more complicated than it needs to be. If you look at the best relationships you have it is usually because you care about one another, you spend time together, and you value what the other has to say. The same things hold true for a relationship with God.

Communicate with Him through prayer, which is just talking to God and trying to listen for the many ways He responds to us. Quiet your heart and simply try to listen to Him each day. Get to know him through worship and reading the bible.

The Bible is God’s true word.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

The Word of God is a living and active word that we can interact with.

Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

God reveals Himself to us through His Word, and He shapes and changes our hearts and lives through His Word. For this reason, believers, especially new ones, should read and study the Bible often. This can feel a little overwhelming at first, but a good place to start is the Book of John, which you can find in the table of contents of any Bible.

Get into Christian Community

God created us for community with other believers. We are stronger when we are living with others and not trying to do life alone. This is especially true as a new believer. You need other believers around you to encourage, teach, pray and worship with you.

As you look for a church, recognize that it should be a reflection of how Jesus loves us and a place where we can connect with others and find true Christian community. All that said, there are no perfect churches. We encourage you to research what a church believes and how they live that out before picking a church home. You should look at a church’s statement of faith or beliefs posted on its web site and visit multiple times. Here are some important questions to consider:

Does this church hold a proper view of Scripture? When investigating a potential church home, pay particular attention to how it views the Bible. Does it hold to the inspiration and inerrancy of the Scriptures? Where do they stand on such crucial issues of the Christian faith as the virgin birth and deity of Jesus Christ; the depravity of mankind; the work of Christ on the cross; His death, burial, and bodily resurrection; salvation by grace through faith alone; the second coming of Christ; and the ordinances of baptism and Communion?

Is there an emphasis on Bible teaching? Does this church practice what it preaches and provide a place for meaningful growth, worship, community and accountability based on Scripture? Does this church care about sharing the Gospel and committed to evangelism?

Is this a church where I am encouraged to serve God’s people and use my gifts for its benefit? Is this a place where the people make up the church or where the church is expected to do everything for the people? What are the membership requirements? Is there a service requirement or expectation for all members?
