The Changing Dynamic of Faith in Young Women

Sometimes you read something and think that can’t be right. This was my reaction to recent research from the Barna Group. It shows that 38 percent of Gen Z women, ages 18-24  years old, now identify as atheist, agnostic, or having no faith. This dramatic reversal contradicts historical patterns where women consistently led in church attendance and spiritual engagement.

The statistics are sobering and troubling. Only 58 percent of young adult women reported praying recently, and just 30 percent attended church in the past week. This is the lowest rate of any demographic surveyed.

Beyond the spiritual disconnect lies a deeper relational void. Only 23 percent feel supported by their fathers and 36 percent by their mothers. Perhaps most telling, 40 percent agree that “older people don’t seem to understand the pressure my generation is under.” They are carrying burdens previous generations cannot fully comprehend, often without the anchoring presence of faith or meaningful intergenerational relationships.

These aren’t just statistics, as they represent daughters, sisters, granddaughters, and friends growing spiritually adrift during a critical season of life. This is why Need Him Global is so essential.

Our conversations consistently reach younger women more than any other demographic. We meet them in digital spaces where they already live, work, and search for meaning. Anonymous conversation removes barriers that often prevent young women from traditional church engagement. Many are exhausted from walking into church alone and feeling judged for career and relationship choices.

We create safe spaces for honest questions and vulnerable conversations, offering the spiritual encouragement critical to changing Gen Z women’s spiritual trajectories. We meet young women where questions arise, often late at night during moments of loneliness or uncertainty.

In this digital age, our online presence is a frontline mission field. Every conversation with a young woman offers an opportunity to model faith, provide understanding, and remind her that she is seen, valued, and deeply loved by God. These connections become lifelines leading to transformed lives and renewed faith.

The data confirms that Gen Z women are not the same as previous generations. But we know that when young women find authentic relationships and supportive spiritual community, their faith can flourish. Need Him Global isn’t just about keeping pace with technology but connecting with a generation of women searching for hope, belonging, and truth in a changing world.
